I recall seeing a variation on the "stack of discs" method using a stack of laminex samples attached to the threaded rod. The samples were roughly the size of playing cards, with the hole at one end (or corner). The stack was held together with the threaded rod (captive nuts at each end)
in use, the stack was placed/ rolled over the item to go into the vise, and that would displace a set of "cards" roughly equal to the thickness of the material being gripped in the vise. Those cards were left hanging down between the jaws, and the other card stood up resting ON the tops of the vices jaws - them plus the rod/nut stopped the shim pack dropping between the jaws, and the laminex was hard/resilient enough to withstand the force of the vice jaws in use.

I use a similar stack of cut up pallet strapping in a similar method.
