An oscillating sander is more efficient than a pure rotary one and is less likely to gouge soft work and leave a series of small swirl marks as compared to large semi-circles which is why they are used to cut paint. Also don't clog sandpaper as much as a rotary sander.

Thanks NortonDommi, so it is just "wiggling " to create much smaller movements - and the why is what you said above about small swirls, and less clogging of the paper.

It also utilizes more of the abrasive available, with the center, not building up a raised deposit. The semi-circles are about 3/8" diameter, instead of concentric scratches. Not as fine a finish, but much like lapping.

Thanks!!! - makes sense - you can tell I don't do a lot of sanding, but I daresay that will change one day.
