This is a much later machine than the one I remember from around the 60s, It caught my interest in an issue of Motorcycle Sport, I think he was referred to as E,J,Potter The mad Man of Michigan.

EJ Potter wrote a fine auto, or should I say motobiography titled Madman of Michigan. If you can find it, it's a great read.

Yeah; The Michigan Mad Man. Saw this lunatic in 1969 at Bristol. I was but a tender lad, there with my father, birthday gift for me. There were Mustang and Camaro jet funny cars as well as nitro dragsters and pro stocks. But this guy...
He fired it up on a stand at the starting line, kicked it off the stand, and all you could see going down the track was his head sticking out of a cloud of tire smoke. Totally corrupted my morals.

There was nothing like his 4,000 HP, Alison W-24, called Double Ugly written on a valve cover in shoe polish! (2 Alison V-12s bolted together). It made a full pull on every pass and nobody came close to beating him the night I saw him.
