    The title says it all. Harbor Freight sells this as a winch. It is not intended to be used as a hoist. My guess is it doesn’t have a mechanical locking mechanism to prevent unwinding if power is lost. Am I wrong?

    The only time there is power to the winch is when it is being reeled in or out.
