engine break in stand

tried to post a reply to DocModisett post on an engine break-in stand...but it got lost on the information cul-de-sac I guess...

anyway... here's what I did up to break in a 460 ford. It's built strictly for this engine but can be modified for others... not a pro built job but suited my purpose... maybe it will spark an idea for you

Well,,,,John,,, i have had something like this on my mind for a long time,,,, I rebuild old Buick engines and cars since I retired, and actually before that,,,, and I like to prime up the oil pump , set timing, ect before I go to the trouble of setting the thing back in the car... that way if there is a problem it is a lot easier to deal with and when you set the engine back into the car it goes in you know that it is good to go.... I am copying all this info for future use.... thanks a bunch ,, you have saved me a lot of work and mistakes, I do know.......

I have a test stand very similar to yours . Mine is made of "L" shape metal but upside down with heavy duty 5" canisters . It was made for a large tool cheit to sit into and roll around . I build mone for SBF engines which I build the most . I took a blue engine stand and set it inside the "L" base and welded it in place . Then I cut off the rear flat brackets that are suppose to be connected to the back of the engine . I welded another bracket to bolt to the front of the engine and one to bolt to the rear of the engine with a bell housing or trans connected to the block . I then welded 2 "L" braces on the front of the frame and bolted a radiator to that . I also welded a 3/4" square bar across the 2 radiator supports so I can push or pull the engine test stand around with an engine on it . I have a a set of gauges to hook up and a place for a battery to be mounted on the side in the front by the radiator . Works really great ! I might have $60 to $70 in the frame , $25 for radiator and $50 in the wheels . Radiator was from a swap meet . I will need to build an adapter to accept a BBF 429 engine since I have one to build for a gasser I am building . I have seen some nice test stand but cost many times what I have in mine !
