as a teen working at the blacksmith shop every 4th of July the 2 blacksmiths would haul their anvils out to the center of the town square lay 1 upside down fill the cavity with black powder then put the other one on top. And no they don't always go straight up and straight back down once year a couple neighboring towns blacksmiths' brought anvils over and they had a competition of sorts. It was loads of fun watching and participating in making 200 to 300 lb hunks of steel launch into the air
