    I don't understand what they're trying to do. Why would they think gas spurting out like that is normal for a running engine.

    Presumably they have hydraulic lock (cylinder is filled with liquid. Ie fuel) so have removed plugs and are hand cranking engine to eject fuel through the spark plug holes.
