Great for saving some space - any other reason to make it

2 reasons come to mind. Possibly there was a need to get something through that door which the stairs interfered with? The other reason...... because he could! LOL. I think it is creative but a hell of a lot of work. If there are 13 treads, he has to install 416 screws in all those hinges. Any misalignment will cause binding in that hinge.
