It's not self driving; it just follows him around so he doesn't have to push that big, heavy thing everywhere. And because he's in front of it, he can see and avoid obstacles as the machine follows. I thought it was quite clever, myself.
Now, the actual self-driving robo-vacs I've used (iRobot Roomba, etc.) were pretty horrible, both in how they worked as a vacuum and in how they navigated around the house or shop.
