Speculating RH not working versus LH which does, is caused by motion of thumb and fingers. Right puts torque away from joint and blades open the gap. I just tried it with tinsnips, they'll operate either way, only because of high degree of flatness in both sides of the joint and pivot tightened for ~'zero' clearance.
None the less, using other hand creates awkward manipulation.
