if it weren't for the bit of string touching the ground, I'd have said it was running in reverse.
How is the attachment getting a grip/ lift on the load?

There is a sheet of cardboard type stuff (I believe that is what "slip sheet" refers to here. I think it is typically plastic coated) between the pallet and the bags of stuff piled on it. If you look at the very bottom of the gizmo the extends to the bags, you can see the clamp thing that grabs the end of the sheet and drags the pile onto the forklift.
