Recently, I watched a smart phone addicted yoyo pull away from the pump with the nozzle still attached. My immediate thought was that there would be a gasoline fire right in front of me. To my surprise, the hose had detached cleanly from the pump. There was no spraying fuel and, happily, no fire.
I noticed that there was a metal fitting at the pump end of the hose that mated into a similar fitting on the pump. I can only assume that it's meant to separate at that point when pulled and that, when that happens, a hidden safety valve closes and prevents the escape of any fuel.
