    Not sure on that one. We need to see sample size of 10-20 more attempts to prove that out. Looks like it could even be a different species of wood between the two.

    In my younger years I used to notice old furniture and cabinet makers practiced several methods to prevent splitting. some would rub a finishing nail to the side of their nose to coat it with the natural oils produced there. Some would roll screws and nails in a bar of soap. Almost all would say there are times when a pilot hole is an absolute must then coat the nail or screw in glue. But I never heard one say flick your bic lighter to prevent splitting maybe it works and maybe it is just an internet hack.
