The url ...treehugger... flipped my sensitivity switch, which normally is locked-out and tagged in the OFF position.
The final paragraph offered here in quotes, copy/ pasted directly contains a sentiment I've italicized which far too few attach meaning these days.
"After all, old trees like this one are important for far more than just offering cool shade on a hot day -- they serve to keep a purer measure of time amidst all of our fickle modernity, and their silent witness to history will no doubt speak more fondly to our future than any crowded street they might be felled for."

There is an age group that no longer cares for antiques. The generation who raised them tossed valuable furniture and so on, replaced by pressed wood, so the market and appreciation will continue to degrade for sometime. Then it will be rediscovered as something special.
Preservation and re-utilization efforts suit me at many levels. Doesn't matter much; old Niagara shears, oft modded HF tools, my 95 Buick, our 1902 Colonial Revival home, it's hard to care about one without seeing the connection to other objects.
Egg salad is one thing; walnut, leather, plaster, cast iron, black & white photography, distinct old trees earned their place and deserve to remain.
