The standard thread size for indicator attachments is UNF 4-48. If you're a home shop machinist, it's well worth it to buy a tap and die for this thread. Making your own extenders and special tips for DIs is simple can save a bit of money. As an example, make an elephant foot as I did here...

Also useful is a set of extenders of 1, 2, 4 inches. These can be threaded into combinations that cover 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
