Homemade Magnetic Drill

This is the second magnetic drill I've built. In this project, I used three magnetic door lock to build electromagnet. Each magnetic door lock has a maximum pull of 180kg, giving o total of 540kg. I used a laptop power supply, I also tried to connect the magnetic door lock to a 12v 3A power supply, but on this power supply to heat up. The electromagnet is really strong, strong to drill in any position without worrying about the drill falling.
In this project i also decided to build another feed mechanism, which is much more stable and no backlash.

Now that is a clever idea. Magnetic locks come up from time to time with commercial building demolition.

Excellent idea thank you. I have several Champion mag drills with failed magnets that are potted in the base. Using your method I could simply add door switches under the base and gain much needed height so I can install a regular drill chuck!

As a result of this post I bought four magnetic door locks from Ebay for $40 each for fences on a biggish table saw I'm building. much quicker than microwave transformers, which I originally intended to use. Thanks.

Magnetic chucks are designed for either thick or thin metal, does anybody know what these are good for? I have a couple of magnets meant to hoist parts onto machine tools that are useless on iron less than 1/2'' thick.

From what I could glean from the Ebay ad the armature (opposing plate) was no more than 1/8" thick, so clearly not requiring 1/2". It should be noted though, that the locks I bought are only good for 180Kg each. still, 360Kg (two per clamp) should be more than enough for my application.
