    You may cry salty tears when you learn that commercially built lathes are made from cast iron to deaden the machining vibration. Steel lathes "sing" and produce less than desirable results because of the vibration induced imprecision.
    If you can't make it precise make it adjustable.

    Correct me if I'm wrong - bed of small Hardinge toolroom lathe is made out of steel, same goes for the benchtop Rusnok mill(in this case not real steel, but semi-steel isn't cast iron either).
    So, can one make steel toy lathe?
