You really should consider connecting the protective earth lead to this device,
hopefully with a "Ground Fault Circuit Interruptor" before your outlet socket.
Being an electrician, I've learned that these things work,
and that they're sadly often necessary to protect people in their blind dates with Darwin,
given the quality of appliances, extension cords and electrical workmanship nowadays.

Only last week I ran a thick earth wire (car starter cable) through my workshop with connections to every machine and metal framed benches, vices etc. directly from the house earth stake which just happens to be inside the workshop. "Over kill" perhaps but I like "no kill".

Tony, do you live in a lightning-active area?
Are all your machines having a safety ground lead?
Normally (depending on your local regulations) running a parallel ground lead (parallel to the existing safety ground lead)
is not recommended.
Non-electrical stuff could be hooked up to an "equi-potentialization rail" (or whatever its called) that is hardwired (> 16 sq mm) to the ground stake.

I did that to the house I built back in '98:
Incoming 3phase, telephone and antenna leads - everything with its own 40 kA MOV to this ground ring in the concrete foundation.
This was a better ground than the electric company had 250 m upstream, so I had app 3-6 amp flowing into my basement foundation
from the entire village's unbalanced 3-phase loads, the Neutral needing a better ground...

Chimney, vent pipes, even the steel wall studding was interconnected to this rail,
so IF lightning would've hit everything inside would float at the same potential.
Never unplugged an appliance during the 15 years we lived there.
Not luck - just good solid engineering.
The snag is - a badly designed lightning conductor system is in fact worse than none at all.

I could go on forever with an entire wall of text - and scare you guys with lightning damage and so on,
but as I'm only qualified within Swedish Codes when it comes to this particular field,
I suggest you check your local regulations and someone proficient in adaptations of those.

As I usually tell my inquisitive students:
"This might seem simple, but just wait 'til I've explained!"

I never consider building, wiring or plumbing codes. I do what I want in my own house. Anyway in this case there is no problem because there are no parallel earth lines.

I suggest you check your local regulations and someone proficient in adaptations of those.

Thanks for your concern but do not worry. I have no regard for local regulations and I doubt if anyone involved in them would be more proficient. I always do things my way and accept the consequences. I do have a degree in EE but I know that does not make me immune to electrocution.

Back on topic: I surely hope Mr. DK DIY don't have his workbench grounded by a starter cable,
whilst continue fingering his still ungrounded vibrating contraption with the live AC wire dangling around.

-It's more better to get a mere humorous BPM award from me, than achieving a fully justified "Darwin Award"!
