Common sight on the cattle ranch I grew up on. A well-trained horse does a lot of things for the rider.

Something that must be trained or is there a natural protective instinct developed between horse and owner

Little bit of both, although my personal experience is that a mule is a good bit more protective of its rider once the two have bonded.

Out where I live there are cattle and sheep on fairly small pastures. They stick either a donkey or a Llama out with the sheep. We have a lot of deer, so a lot of Coyotes. The donkeys will kill coyotes rather swiftly and so will the Llamas.

Amazing animals when you think about it.

Donkeys, burros, mules all will take on and kill coyotes, one of our mules grabbed a mountain lion by the neck, snapped its neck, tossed the cat in the air, when it hit the ground that big Jack landed on it with all four feet. Lion never knew what hit him.
