I have to admit, I am surprised seeing that in China.

I know there are some places near me where apartments have been built around a single property with would not sell. They just wait for the owner to age out of the house then buy it, tear it down and build another apartment building.

Nail houses are relatively common in China. As surprising as it is, given that China is a communist country (on paper, anyhow), they have robust landowner protections. At least local and provincial governments can't force individuals out of their occupied homes.
