In the past I have had watermelons that still had dirt on them. They obviously didn't go through this treatment.

I think one of the reasons I have large hands is I used to pull from the vines and toss a lot of watermelons and cantaloupes to a guy in the truck

A lot of this type of processing is a result of increased on-farm food safety programs. GAPs (Good Agricultural Practices) and other prerequisite programs help control hazards an help reduce the risk pathogens inherent to farming in general. One of the newest ways is indoor, vertical farming where you can grow 10 acres of product in a 1 acre building, think 10 layers of growth in one area.
