When I was looking for a job at 18 years old, I went to a shake mill and put in an application but I saw the men who were missing thumbs and index fingers and I asked why so many people had missing fingers? The final answer was, I looked for work else where!

Having been around a few folks with missing parts like you described, I found out that most of those missing finger parts were caused by, Christmas. The need to buy presents for their children sometimes caused some folks to loose a half a finger etc on the job, so they could make a insurance claim in time for Christmas day.

Yup, insurance claims are now vetted for such things, in the 1990's I worked for Belling cookers for 3 months, during the training we went round the factory, large metal cutting and pressing machinery with the legally required guarding meant most body parts were intact, however a minority of the operators refused to wear the provided hearing protection, as in the longer term they could claim 'industrial injury' and expect a pay-out from the government at tax payers expense.

When we visited my grandparents in Oregon in 1960, my gradfdaather was building a new shed and my brother and I made the shingles (shakes) the old fashioned way with a froe and a wood maul.
