When I was a kid, we found a "torpedo" - an explosive pack about half the size of a pack of cigarettes - that sat on the tracks and would make a extremely loud noise when the train wheels hit it. Its purpose was to alert the engineer to problems with the track.
(When the engineer caught us, he said we could have caused a derailment if the train was going faster and activated an emergency stop. As it was, he saw us playing and had already slowed way down because he knew the track ahead was sketchy - hence the torpedo that we found. What a sound that torpedo made!)
My guess is that those torpedoes are not used by this rail line.
Are they used anywhere these days?

Talking about what kids do.... We had a kid who broke into a railway locker and took out the detonators that are used to indicate that a train is approaching. This smart lad took them home and fashioned 4 of them to fit into a pipe. He was tapping over the ends when they exploded, send his arm off at the elbow splatting his room with the rest of his hand and arm. He lost his arm from the elbow down and then was charged by the police with break and enter... A bad day just go worse!!!

American steam locomotives had substantially larger “cow catchers” prominent in front of the boiler and above the tracks to remove debris before it. Just to think, this was actually all that was required! I guess we Americans have a tendency to “over-engineer” everything!
