I visited the White House in 1996, and at the time they had these installed in conjunction with the two gates on the North side. I'd be interested in seeing the whole unit, as we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
Those things should not be legal in the UK.

Looks like a commercial truck would have no problem.
