    That's awesome. It reminds me of a mechanism I made years ago to (horizontally) capture and then (vertically) lift an object of unknown size, with no sensors and a single motor. There were two grippers that would swing in from the side. Once the grippers hit something it would stop the gears from moving, but the powertrain driving those gears was still turning. That bindup would cause the whole thing to lift. It worked pretty good.
