lived there (turned out to a fire at that very petrol station) - Port Hedland (Dixon's rest)
a road train like that is used by the "junior miners", the big players have private railway lines where the trains are 2x 120 or cars long, plus at least 2 locomotives (typically four) - each ore car is 10.38m long, a loco is about double that... making a typical ore train around 2.5 - 3km long

Does one call ahead to the driver of the truck to know it is safe to pass?

pretty much - you don't overtake these road trains, and if something goes pear shaped, it goes bad fast. Turned out to few a "rollover"s, one where the driver fell asleep and run off the road, another where he cornered too fast and the last three trailers seperated and crossed 3 lanes of traffic.
