A variation on this idea is to use a piece of flat leaf spring. I didn't have any of this tough metal but steel strap worked ok: https://rick.sparber.org/NarrowDigger.pdf which was a copy of one built by Ranald: VERSATILE DIGGER FOR PLANTS, SANDSTONE, RIVER GRAVEL, COMPACTED SOIL etc

I have a narrow bucket for my backhoe, I am amazed I have never seen a narrow spade like this. Excellent idea.

Jesus, that would have been handy when I was a teenager working for my Uncle Bob who was a freshwater well driller. Digging the trenches for the water feed line from the pump to the house with this tool would have been much easier.
