Hi Gang:
I remember a Popular Mechanics article for building a garage door opener. ( Not installing a store bought one) It used three threaded rods welded together. The trick to get the threads "timed" right was to use short sections of matching rod to form a "V" block when welding. Then they ran a thread die over the weld.
