Mystery clocks have been around since the early 1900's. There are glass plates that the hands are painted on and are set in a geared ring driven by the clockworks and outer plates that are fixed to give the illusion that it is one stationary piece. If you have a Jefferson from the 1950's era in decent shape, they are worth upwards of $200 now! There are others from the 20's and 30's that can fetch over $500 and up to $1000

This one looks like it has some sort of geared mechanism associated with the center pin that drives at least one of the hands from the movement of the glass plate. Way cool!
