Having seen the sheer volume, a lot of very skilled graphic artists going to waste, in Italy along the railway system on concrete retaining walls etc I agree it's never going to clean it all up, for cleaning up ancient stone work however it's probably a lot less damaging than chemicals and high pressure water cleaning methods.
