Lathe & Mill Tacometer
Hall Effect Tachometer mounted one on the Lathe and one on the Mill.
Lathe Setup with my DRO.Attachment 1524Attachment 1525Attachment 1526
Mill Setup. I mounted the readout in the same enclosure as my VFD. The Sensor is mounted thru the top of the Belt housing and the magnet is glued to the top of the belt pulley. Direct readout for all high speed operations and calculated for all Back Gear operations. The enclosure was reclaimed from a toasted UPS unit. Attachment 1527Attachment 1528Attachment 1529

Thanks Catfish! I've added your Lathe and Mill Tachometer to our Electrical and Measuring and Marking categories, as well as to your builder page: Catfish's Homemade Tools. Your receipt:

I have one similar to that on my variable speed Rockwell drill press. I put a magnet on the outside of my rockwell lathe where the collet closer would mount and it doesn't give me a reading I take the same parts and they work on the drill press. I tried manually holding the pu end and nothing on the lathe manually holding on the drill press it works. the metal piece on the lathe is about 2 1/4 in in dia. and the one on the drill press is about 1 in. I can't figure out why it is not working on the lathe. the variable speed lathe is where I really wanted to use it.

I found that it mattered which magnet face was towards the sensor. I also think that they work better if the magnet is mounted on ferrous metal.

Hello Catfish,
Great job I have never heard of the hall effect. Do you have details on how to do this?

Randy,
This is a great design using a Hall Effect sensor rather optical. I want to construct this type of RPM reader and display for my lathe. Can you provide the manufacturer of the Hall Effect sensor, the counting electronics/power supply, and digital LED display part you used? I good at building electronic devices if you can provide the information on the parts and schematics or direct me to the sources for what you built.
Thanks, Paul
