    Leibniz stepped reckoner - photo

    The stepped reckoner was a mechanical calculator capable of performing all four arithmetic operations. It was invented by the German polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in the 1670s.

    More than a polymath. Leibniz was the co-discoverer of the Calculus (Denied by Newton's supporters). His notations survive to this day.
