In Line Pool Filter Modification

My in line pool filter has a design defect. A crazy amount of force is needed to pull the top off. This article presents a modification that lets me do the task with a lot less effort. I used a short piece of PVC pipe, my lathe, and my bandsaw to make a collar. It just snaps on the filter.

I like your modification and advice for the in-line pool debris filter. I live in an area of southern California where we have Santa Ana winds. Cleaning the pool of leaf debris after one of these wind storms had been a challenge for my Zodiac G3 cleaner because the only way to remove the vacuumed-up leaves was constantly dumping the pool pump strainer. Sooner or later the O-ring in the pool pump strainer cover wears and develops a suction leak. It is not an easy problem to detect because it comes on gradually but if not fixed can eventually lead to pool pump priming problems and bad seals. Like you, I added an in-line debris strainer in the pool cleaner vacuum line (Zodiac CLC500 Cyclonic Automatic Pool Cleaner Leaf Catcher Canister) and no more problems with the pool pump cover O-ring leaks. It is one of those small improvements I should have done years ago.

The only time I don't like servicing the in line filter is when the water is very cold.
