The long horn cattle were the result of inner breeding of other breeds brought over by Columbus to the Caribbean Islands in 1483 some of those animals escaped to the mainland of central America by swimming. then became feral and over the course of a century or 2 the cattle developed resistance to extreme conditions drought heat and poor food supply. Their horns grew longer and longer thought to be for much the same reasons the Watusi horns developed the way they did. to dissipate heat from their bodies and as a predator defense the longhorn nearly became extinct in the early 1920's
    Thats very interesting Frank.
We had horses, pigs & cattle that survived (other species didn't) and became feral esp the pigs & wild horses, that were left on our east coast islands for survivors of ship whecks. Of course this canturies after CC. the pigs were more likely to kill the survivors and it would take a good horse whisperer to catch/tame the broncos. One night, early 70's on South Stradbroke Is a mate & I were attacked by horses & narrowly escaped to our 12 ft tinnie : they didn't follow us far into the water. We retrieved our surf rods and other stuff that hadn't been trampled the next day. Left us wary of night walking across the Island even for the alure of Tailer, Mullaway, Travelly and big Bream etc,. There is quick sand among the dunes but horses & cattle know where to & where not to drink.
