A cardboard cover could be glued over the strips of wood but I don't bother.

Clever idea Marv, but where is the magnetic mat located in a fridge? I am familiar with the magnetic edging used to hold the doors shut and I use that for multiple purposes but I have never seen a mat like yours.

If this question had come from anyone other than you, Tony, I would have guessed he was putting me on. But I know you're a no-nonsense guy so I'll provide a legitimate answer.

Here in the USA "refrigerator magnets" are an extremely common form of advertising media. A thin magnetic sheet is printed on one side with contact information for some goods or service source the homeowner might need. The idea is that the homeowner sticks these to the family refrigerator so, the next time they need that service, the phone number, URL, address, whatever is immediately to hand.

If one isn't careful, one can turn his refrigerator into a personal, indoor "Morris column",

Thanks, it was a genuine question and now I feel rather stupid. I now remember those from when I lived in the US for 3 years. It just did not enter my head when I read your post.

Your mention of French cities and magnets reminds me of one use that I put the fridge door magnet strips to. French curves, the magnet strips have just the right amount of flex and stiffness to stay in place when you bend them to shape. That is after you remove the outer covering.
