    Thank you, internet knife-making guy.

    Gotta' brag on my son - he decided he wanted to use his time between semesters of Engineering school to make some knives as gifts for friends - so he watched a lot of videos. Like you say, he used 1084, heat treated and tempered; checked hardness at work; around 54C, IIRC.
