I don't know how many other cities used this concept But I have seen city maps on manhole covers in Seattle and some in Germany as well Many cities will have landmarks and highlights of the city cast in their manholes around the world it is actually a quite useful concept probably wont get you near as lost as your GPS can do

Once while in Milano Italy I got on a bus in the city center I knew I needed the bus number 6 to get back to my hotel. It is getting late at night and the last bus shows up I get on and soon instead of going North at the freeway about 5 miles from my hotel it suddenly turns south. Ok I remembered that it did go south for a couple miles then make a loop back to the north so when he passes the stop where it had made a u turn before I question the driver with the only few words in Italian I can put together. He tells me in broken English that the late bus does not go the full route. but if I get off at the next stop the number 8 will be by in a few minutes I'm to take it to the turn around stop then wait for the number 3 which will get me within half a km of the hotel. Wrong. the number 3 was on its return trip as well so by the time I got to the hotel it was nearly midnight and I had shoe leathered it for about 10 Km walking right past the bus stop where I had gotten on the 6 in the first place. I rented a motor scooter the next day for the remainder of the week I was there.
