This is what I liked about older cars and pickups with vacuum wipers even though there never seamed to be enough vacuum to operate them you could manually operate them from the inside. Also trucks with air powered wipers had a leaver on the motors

I'm thinking something along the line of machine gun timing on aircraft to avoid propellers

I've often thought we should rock our heads from side to side whilst driving in the rain to avoid the wipers obscuring our view.
If you hear the UKs planned regulations for driving its scary. We had using mobile phone and smoking which kid of makes sense now they are targeting the use of hands free and radios as they cause a distraction - it wont be long before the driver is boxed in to prevent them from being distracted by anyone or anything in the car. Wipers are a huge distraction especially when the rain smears the dead flies and grease around until it rains hard enough to be effective.

So question when we get driver-less cars can we then get back to smoking (including joints if so wished) drinking beer using the phone and listening to rock music.
the car will be so safe the driver will become immaterial.

The pure genius of the windscreen wiper method deserves tool of the week surely. Is the intermittent function when the wiper operator is playing candy crush or generally being a nob with their head stuck in a phone and not paying attention.

You know the whole distraction thing is something that I have a difficulty in understanding Right about the time that cell phones started to become a viable tool to have while traveling especially when driving a truck trying to contact where you were scheduled to deliver. I remember once I was on the 405 in Los Angeles in my truck driving along hauling an Over dimensional load I had 2 CBs one tuned to the 2 escorts accompanying me 1 tuned to the regular truck channel my radio had a book on tape playing coffee in the cup 2 gear shifts to contend with sometimes a cigarette in my mouth traffic constantly speeding up and slowing 4 wheelers cutting between me and the pilot car then for no reason hitting their brakes then the stupid cell phone would demand attention. This was long before anyone could ever imagine a hands free device of any kind. There were times when I wished I had been born with 4 ears 6 hands and eyes going all the way round my head, but I managed so I have problems with understanding these younger's who can't even manage to stop at traffic lights driving their automatic transmission vehicles with hands free everything or all internal systems of the vehicle at finger tip control right in the steering wheel.
Now you are telling me that the wipers are a distraction to them
Never try to tell me it can't be done
When I have to paint I use KBS products

My wipers work fine and do not distract me, I do not smoke, I only rarely carry a mobile phone with me and I would never call or answer it whilst moving, I don't do text, but sometimes I suffer the biggest distraction of all.

My wife gets in the car.

That's a double thumbs up Tony

I guess if your wipers do break she can operate them manually

The thing that bothers me more than anything else is ppl driving during the day time with their high beams on.
Not so much as a distraction as it is an involuntary arc avoidance reflex from 55+ years of welding.
I have almost managed to become accustomed to the low intensity led daylight running lights that form a rim of light around the headlights to the point that they don't bother me all that much but even then if someone is following me with them on I do what ever I can to force them to go around me. 90% of my driving is on 2 lane highways and meeting a vehicle with high intensity lights on during the day is just like arc flash from a welder to me.
Just like air bags I will never be made to believe they are a safety feature
Never try to tell me it can't be done

I agree Frank, whats the point of surviving a crash only to be booted in the chest by something that has the impact similar to being kicked by an elephant.
How they came up with that i have no idea, do elephants usually go around lashing out and kicking people. The odd occasional rampage perhaps - like we all do.
this road rage thing is going a bit too far if people are using pet elephants to go around kicking other drivers.
what is the world coming to.

perhaps it could swing its trunk from side to side and operate the wipers.
