    MOBILE DRUM SANDER TROLLEY

When my 19_38 SuperMax drum sander arrived, I had a spot planned for it but found that it was unsuitable due to being fixed to a wall.

I had some Brownbuilt metal shelving in another shed & thought at 900mm high it would work well.
I use some for sharpening & mitre sawing & that height is comfortable for me. It was too awkward to use after attaching 100 mm castors & reducing the height a bit for the sanders ends. I also fitted a sheet of plywood over some checkerplate foam rubber to dampen bumps & noise generated by the steel bench. A piece of scrap aluminium was used to brace the open front.

Therefore it was on to plan B.

I decided that 230mm should be cut off the cabinet (& keep the finished height a little below my tablesaw height) so did that. To avoid jaming I inserted tiling wedges as I cut.

I also left the front two corners till last & cut them with a hacksaw. I had thought of using a G cramp spaced over the hearby cut but decided against that.

I replaced the top with foam & ply & it now it is much easier to manage. The final height is approx 870mm.

I have had a minor irritating issue with this excellent sander and will cover that in a different post.

Thanks Jim, I was going to make & eventually found some plans for a flat table drum sander but after trying one at my local woodies club I changed my mind and promised myself one of these when I had the loot (wish I had one 40 years ago:lol). The flat table ones are good but really, really slow and can't be used as a thicknesser. The con for the 19_38 & other similar ones it the limitation of height, but in those cases (excuse pun) I use an orbital hand held job.

Can you show your version or is it in/on HMT already- I did a search, but not too flash on the laptop.
    Cheers

Ta! I remember your post now & did a reply there. I'm learning more about this "website" or whatever it 's official description is: I often search, obviously incorrectly, to no avail and end up going on with requisite duties like housework (my partner works full time). It has lots more than meets the eye: transforming me! A bit like Excel the more I play the more I find. I need more hours in the day= no chronic fatigue would allow me to better leverage my time.LOL

    Cheers,

    Hi Jim,
It's an Oneida, Super Dust Deputy from North America: (I really like US, Canadian. UK, NZ, German, Swiss and Oz made stuff). There is some detail in my HMT post for the mobile dust extraction unit, but here is some more info. I purchased from Carbatec for $500 but worth it as my homemade one was thrown out yonks ago as I just couldn't get it right: some might FITH: maybe should have tried just either metal or wood instead of combining materials.

Had a couple of minor issues with fitting. There is a 5" inlet and after declining my 200 litre flat top plastic drum, I went for a smaller, lighter when filled, shorter (to avoid my overhead storage as I needed mobility) drum which did not have a flat top so made a spacer type union from masonite using a router.

Pic showing inlet for template with union
for attaching base of cyclone to drum top.
    MOBILE DRUM SANDER TROLLEY-rsz_dsc_0892.jpg

That was then siliconed & bolted to the clip off top of the drum and looks like this

    MOBILE DRUM SANDER TROLLEY-rsz_dsc_0634-2-.jpg

As the Oneida has a 6" inlet, & doesn't come
with a step down I bought 6"/5" one from Carbatec.
It of course didn't fit so used some 6" pvc down/storm pipe
which worked fine. Siliconed on for dust proofing and strength. MOBILE DRUM SANDER TROLLEY-rsz_dsc_1274.jpg

Next minor issue was the connection to my 1992 extractor.
The metal one that came with cyclone or I bought with it wouldn't
slot together so to make them align I made this connector
by cutting some more 6" pvc and joining with long alloy
rivets and more silicone. Worked a treat. MOBILE DRUM SANDER TROLLEY-rsz_dsc_1275.jpg
I have a smaller plastic Dust Deputy with similar minor
challengers but have not really looked at as yet due to
all the other stuff going on.

I had to get out the house away from SWIBO, and had
some fun making an Angry Bear for my regen rain forrest
& was told it looked nothing like a grizzly so it is a really
big Boo Boo. LOL. No green hat/tie and only 5'4".

P.S. I did not earth the very short lengths of PVC.

Cheers, I hope this helps & brings a grin
