More solution a than homemade or tool.

Friend Mr. C is a seriously talented mechanic. His favorite projects are garden/ farm machinery.. Nuts for Walkers, Gravely, David Bradley, such as mowers and tillers or all the various garden patch tractors. His latest, a completely home finished mower, restored with virtually no samples extant, and very few photos.
Photo is the 1977 Scooter brand Mower.

This post focus is on a related solution, that mowers starting battery. Not even a year old, got sideways in it's mount and arced off (burned) the post completely. Common old style, not a side mount, was a puzzle to not toss $80+ worth otherwise fine product.
His first question was if he should drill and tap, which I agreed as perfectly logical.
Once breakfast started to take effect, revamped that, to instead drill and use self-tapping machine screw.. "Get one a little bit long and double nut into hole, then remove one and affix cable".
Was confident a single pass and not withdrawn fitting to be tighter; compared with tapping lead, certain to enlarge the hole coming back out.

Yes Been there done that used a 1/4" wood screw thread on 1 end the other end 1/4 20 thread drilled pilot hole took care not to drill too deep as to drill down into the plates through the post ran a nut down tot eh post to secure the screw then installed the cable and tightened with a second nut. if even needed to remove could use back up wrench below the cable so as not to disturb the screw threads.

Wood screw one end/ machine threads on the other are "hanger bolts". Real difficult scrounging up over the counter, or not in bulk. But are probably tightest connection, closest to 100% engagement possible, being they are tapered.
Being removable was point for a external machine thread, he pulls batteries off season, but it will fit elsewhere.

    Sound familiar?
    Same for mysterious double posts.
Jon, would a delete feature lasting as long as edit option help?
