I've done that with propane when out 4 wheeling and someone blew a tire and had a spare, but no spare rim.
A bit exciting at times, but it works.
The hair spray or whatever he is using is a new one on me though.

When I worked on heavy trucks, we'd set beads this way.

A few tricks to help you live longer. Ether/starting fluid works. 3 seconds sprayed in the rim then spray the ground and light the ground. That allows your dangly bits to not be in the immediate vicinity of the tire if it decides to get all explodey. Don't do it on hazmat or logging trucks, obvs.

Explosions in the presence of unprotected eyes is, always, a good idea.
