My new toolbox

I started with an old ex-military metal tanker desk from Craigslist.



Took the top and legs off, welded the two pedestals together vertically, made a metal top and attached casters to the bottom. Then I filled in the seam with Bondo and painted it today and now I've finally got a good place to keep my hand tools together, organized and handy. It's got 4 regular size drawers (all 28" deep), two thin drawers and a double height drawer at the bottom for larger stuff, all mounted on full extension slides. I still have to make some more drawer dividers (there's slots in each drawer to support them) and I'll be buying some shower underlayment sheet for tool cushioning on the floor of each drawer. I spent some extra time making the original drawer lock work for all the drawers but I'll probably never use it except maybe when transporting it. It's not as heavy as when it was a desk but it's still heavy enough that I use my hoist to lift it. Total invested: $60 including desk, paint, Bondo and casters.

Finished it yesterday and moved all my tools into it and I've still got lots of space for more. This will be a game changer for me and no doubt will speed my general operations since I won't be spending all that time looking for a particular tool.

I found the missing drawer pull and added it on top of the bottom drawer and now it really has a completed look to it. I also made a couple of removable pins for the thin drawers from duplex nails so that the previously unlocked thin drawers now are locked by the full size drawers underneath them, but the pins pull out easily when the lower drawer is opened.

I'd make him do it. After all, you have means to identify the culprit.

2nd picture, handprint blatantly visible. Find good help these days? Impossible! And quality control? Out the window! Just need to market accordingly.

In other news, Crusty's new tool box, while still in R&D shows tremendous potential. A product of re-utilization, it gains storage space (in less floor space), portability, low cost, and varied drawer sizes. It's a hexa-win situation. A single existing prototype is available; hand-signed by the creator himself!

I've already asked myself several times why didn't I build this years ago because it's a game changer for me to just grab the tool I need and continue on without a search in between. I'm really happy that I made this.

I'll touch up that handprint when it finally stops raining and dries out some, and since I've known the moron my entire life I'm cutting him some slack.

You missed the most significant feature Fred: It promotes rapid location and acquisition of any particular tool when used in a conscientiously applied program of tool returnage. Nine out of ten dentists agree.

The new toolbox is a big improvement to my workflow - much more so than I ever expected. I made this adapter plate for the new motor on my mill yesterday in at least 25% quicker time than I would have before because my hand tools were right there where I expected them to be.
