Any idea what the purpose of that thing is? It doesn't appear it could possibly be airtight. Maybe, it's a sunshade or first level protection against micro particles zipping around up there.

To get a taste of it put on a thick gloves (you don't need to put on a full astronaut gear), and try to tie your shoelaces! The human hand sense of touch is amazing. It feeds the brain with a wealth of information. With the touch of your fingers you can feel the grit of sandpapers fine or coarse: 40/80/120/220/320/400/600/800/1000/2000/3000..

If I were to put on thick gloves like insulated welders gloves, I probably wouldn't be able to tell if an object were hex shaped or pentagram shaped. I'm sure that bare handed I can still tell the difference between 40 and 220 grit sand paper but between 400 and 3000? I doubt it. I've known almost all my life that I have very little sense of touch compared to most everyone else. I've broken wine glasses just picking them up if I'm not careful when I reach for one

That’s one of the most offensive and ill informed comments I’ve seen on this site. Astronauts are anything but stupid. In addition, they endure countless hours of training for their tasks in space. Very few people understand the difficulty working in space with bulky gear, thick gloves and zero gravity.
