At the Daytona Raceway museum are series of collision photos and the safety devices incorporated as a result of those collisions. Window nets came as a result of the arms that got crushed in roll-overs. Partial destruction is one of those safety decisions.

Granted that there are no air bags on these cars, but they are also much better restrained that we are in a passenger car or truck: 5 or 6-point harness, racing seat with extreme side bolsters, full face helmet with a neck and head restraint to keep the head from flopping forward and back, sometimes arm restraints to keep the arms from flopping, full race suit for flame protection, and of course the full tubular rollcage and disposable front frame that collapses.

It boggles my mind that there are people that drive a car on today's roads without a seatbelt. It's almost a 100% chance of dying if you're in a car accident if you're not wearing a seat belt. There are a lot of statistics to back this up too.

I've seen this first hand... one winter I was driving on a road that was a literal sheet of ice. A Tahoe coming towards me lost control, slid sideways until it hit the edge of the ditch and then rolled several times in the deep snow of the ditch and landing right side up. I was the first person on site to check on the occupants. It was a mom and 3 or 4 small kids. Mom was wearing her seatbelt, and all the kids were in their car seats that have 5-point harness belting. Not a single person was physically hurt!!! The Tahoe was also in surprisingly good condition as the deep snow in the ditch had cushioned the impact.

When I was a teen, seatbelts were a new thing. I had such arguments with my buddy who insisted that not wearing seatbelts would allow him to escape in the event of a fire.

More recently, I am amazed by the design of the car seats my grand kids enjoy! Absolute NASCAR level!

The ground effects on those cars don't work when they're sideways!
