I'm a 50 year old auto mechanic, working in a GM dealership. Married with 2 children both past the teen years. We live in north central Missouri. I love to work with my hands, as my hobbies and work attest. Main interests have been for years designing, building and flying my own RC aircraft.

Lately I have taken up building a black powder pistol of my own design, smooth bore. I did build a long bit to ream out the barrel as one tool needed for this project. I have been shooting it for a little now and as you can guess a smooth bore just isn't very accurate and I have been thinking quite a bit about building a rifling machine. Which by the way is what I was researching when I came across this forum.

Not sure what all is in this forum yet but home made tools sounded to be right down my alley.

Good job. Have a 12 inch barrel SS .44 58 Remington. Load 45 gr. 3fg, barely get the 200+gr bullets in it and it blows the hammer back once in a while...yeah, too much pwdr. but dang, what a kick. Beer cans @ 60 yds.
Hope you get the rifling prob. figured out.

Nice job. Stainless is hard to take color, too much nickle in the alloy. Have you tried to color the screw heads by applying a thin layer of brazing material?
    Again, nice job.

PJs, I stumbled upon that finish by accident. I was wanting to brass plate the side frames using brazing rod and torch and then mill them down to a smooth mirror finish, but as I do so often I design as I build. I spattered a layer of brazing rod on to the side plates and buffed with a bench grinder. I looked and looked at that and decided to go with that appearance. The side frames are .20 hot rolled plate, nothing fancy.

Sorry for the delay Sean. Congrats on your build. I will very soon be turning 81 yrs young. I have loved metalworking most of my life, although not being directly employed in the field. I have spent the last 50 yrs or so in the electronics industry both private and govt.
I began gunsmithing in the mid 1960s as a hobby, I also have a love for horology as I served a six year apprenticeship in watch and clock repair beginning at age 13.
That's enough of that, Your best bet for building a rifler is to locate a cheap small lathe and modify it for the twist ratio that you need for proper bullet spin. This can be done by mechanical or electronic servo control for draw and twist of the rifler tool. I have viewed several similar projects on you-tube so that may be a good starting point for your project.
    Good luck, Be safe.
