Non-Standard ¼-20 Nuts
What do you do if you need a nut for a ¼-20 bolt but the standard ones are too large? Here is a simple technique that can be applied in other ways too.

Since you're retapping the nut, maybe you want to think about using metric nuts, e.g. ...
7/16 in ( standard nut size for 1/4-20) = 0.438" AF
10 mm (standard nut size for 6 x 1) = 0.394" AF
