Seems a waste of time to me. All one really needs is a tape measure and a calculator.

The Golden Ratio is the solution to the equation:

1/X = X-1

or in canonical form:

X^2 - X - 1 = 0

which has the (positive) solution:

X = [ 1 + sqrt(5) ] / 2
