An octopus at one of the local aquariums accidentally killed itself. During the night it unscrewed the drain plug from the bottom of its tank and all the water drained out. Later, in an interview, its keeper said it was very inquisitive and bored easily. They enriched its environment by giving it screw-top jars containing bits of its favorite foods so it learned all about threaded fasteners.

1980's? Also in Los Angeles area's Long Beach Aquarium; they were losing fish overnight repeatedly.
Installing cameras revealed their prize octopus had learned to escape it's covered tank, invade a selected tank, dine in grand manner, make an after meal jaunt, return and place the cover as if had been never disturbed.
