    It looks like the weld was what broke the bottom axe head...

    Agreed, the weld would inevitably alter the temper. Still, I would rather have an antique axe rather than a modern one, even though you would think the latter would have superior heat treatment. Also old hatchets are cheap as chips!

    The two old axes that belonged to my grandfather take a better edge and STAY sharp much longer than the new ax my friend has.
