    One Wrench~!

Now where did I put that dang 1/2" wrench? This is a very simple fix and in my opinion, worthwhile...

Now screw a handle onto that modified nut and you won't have to hunt for a wrench. That's what I did on my lathe.

Not a bad idea on the carriage lock, it doesn't take much torque although the wrench may be in the way.

Make the handle short. As you say, little torque is needed. If the end of the handle is threaded, the handle can replace the set screw.

If you have an Atlas lathe and a 3D printer, this little carriage lock wrench works surprisingly well, and stays out of the way. 'Been using it on my 10" Atlas for a while now and it works well for me:

THAT'S CHEATING! You can't do that! It's not traditional!

So I need to add a couple or four or five more items to my to-do list...
